I... I just wanted... to help... [mxm][Possibly 18+]

It’s been several years since the National Dismantlement War. Armies disbanded, and most weapons locked away, the governments have formed a new type of UN, talking out their problems. In the abandoned military labs, all of the new inventions got left behind, all the projects closed down, the experiments left to gather dust. Storms, generated by an uncontrolled power generator, causing odd weather changes, blanked the old labs, lightning striking the metal buildings like hellfire. Occasionally, the computers and networks surge with activity, starting up and crashing, corrupting data, and blowing out circuits on the still connected devices.

Project Tails X is still attached to its docking station…

Project Tails X, an experiment in nanotechnology that was made to win the war, has activated from a massive lightning strike. The New UN, known as the Collared Foundation, has foreseen the disaster this may cause, and has formed a task force to stop it. After three years, the task force has been unsuccessful. Now, Operation Niflheim has begun, and has alerted Tails X, who has relocated.

In an attempt to find and weed out the project, Collared has released a massive reward for its successful capture, but, to qualify, one has to apply to become a bounty hunter, and obtain weapons.

Now fearing for its life, it hides amongst the crowds, wanting to escape. It looks for a savior, a person to save it.

The white-haired man, dressed in a worn outfit, baggy jeans, and a faded black hoodie, walks along the street, shaking his head as his black, shined combat boots make small tapping noises against the cracked and scarcely used sidewalk, his five foot 9 inch frame moving slowly. His monochromatic eyes searching the faces of those around him, he seemed to shy away from any direct facial contact, as his eyes were the only thing described in the description from Collared. The right eye, colored a deep, almost blood red, and the left a chilling icy blue, he truly did stand out.

“I hope… I hope I can help… I just… I just need to hide for a while.”

He looks up suddenly, his white hair’s spikes jerking a little, as his eyes look directly at some commotion. It was a mugging at gunpoint. Moving faster than most people could react, he places himself between the man and his attacker. The other male, shocked at the sudden movement, fires several, .45 caliber rounds into his chest and stomach.

Not even phased, the white haired man breaks the assailant’s arm, and takes apart the gun, bleeding slightly from the wounds. The man he was protecting ran off, as he staggers back to the sidewalk, before falling to the ground… slowly loosing consciousness...

A failed project they called him, a waste of the technology they'd used to create him. He had no apparent special powers, despite their best efforts at giving him some to tip the odds in his favour. It was decided that he had nothing to offer them and so he was sent to be destroyed. To them he was just a failed experiment, nothing more, so it didn't matter if he had enough consciousness to be afraid of the future he faced. Being ripped apart for parts and to ensure that he didn't fall into the hands of anyone who might use him against them in the war.

Apparently his body hadn't been able to adapt to the changes they attempted to force on him and the project was abandoned to be tried again when they could find a more suitable subject. So all Fenrir had to look forward to was death. He was always in agony anyway, so for a while it seemed like something he would want, to escape the pain.

But he escaped.

Without the drugs they were pumping into him, and without whatever else they forcing into his body, without his normal immune system being suppressed, he gained enough clarity of mind and freedom from the pain to slip away from those who were transporting him to the decommissioning sector where all failed or outdated projects were taken to see if anything could be salvaged from them before they were dismantled and killed. The Fenrir project was loose. However, by the time news got out that he was, he was already being replaced by another project and thus deemed a waste of the resources that would be needed to locate him. So they just let him go.

The world corrupted him, twisted him until he was capable of surviving it alone. He became a mercenary long before such a path became fashionable, before all the wannabes began springing up looking for easy money. He hunted and killed for money, did anything he was asked if the price was right, just so that he could continue to live, but a sad existence it was.

He was different. He could feel it. Of course, the tail stuffed down the back of his pants was a dead giveaway as it was, but something always felt wrong inside his body, like there was something happening inside him all the time without the old drugs to control it. He didn't know what he was, or what he might be becoming. The longer he was free, the more his abilities began to develop. He had better eyesight, faster reflexes, better balance and strength and endurance better than the average person. He was nothing compared to the latest experiments, but he was able to hold his own if nothing else.

Lank blond hair, dirty and tangled with his undesirable way of life, hung in his eyes, masking the beautiful, if sharp, blue in an attempt to at least mask some of where his attention was lingering. A commotion nearby, one that other people were ignoring. Of course they were, they were afraid to get involved, so selfish that they'd sooner leave the victim to die than offer their aid and risk injury themselves. To Fenrir, it was a possibility to claim some money. Perhaps the thug was wanted, perhaps he could claim the bounty on their head. That was the idea anyway.

Drawing the long, dirty coat tighter across his chest to hide the grubby clothing he wore beneath and protect him somewhat from identification, the blond began heading towards the alley, his gait looking slightly unusual. He'd long ago learned to hide his tail in his pants but it wasn't comfortable at all, and it threw off his balance, making him seem unsteady. He'd managed to mostly compensate for that, but when people thought him vulnerable, unable to walk properly, it often gave him the upper hand when he proved that he was far from an easy target.

He stopped abruptly when a strange figure collapsed practically at his feet, someone involved with the earlier commotion he surmised as he looked over the male. Normally he'd feign disinterest, fear, and move on, but something struck him as odd about the white haired male mere inches from the toes of his boots.

Without stopping to think about it, Fenrir hefted the prone man up, over his shoulder and proceeded to carry him away down the street as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Only once he reached a basement safehouse did he put the stranger down, and then it was onto a rickety, musty smelling bed with thin sheets that he neglected to pull over the man. He did though, ensure that the bullets were no longer lodged in the male's torso and even used his limited supplies to at least close the wounds, stitching him up. Fenrir then stood back, leaning against the wall, hand hovering nearby the gun tucked into the waistband of his pants as he waited for his 'guest' to awaken.

(Hope that was alright. If it needs changing, let me know.)

The last thing he remembers, is the boots of a man in front of him, and a sudden movement, which made him back out. While he was unknowingly being carried, he was jolted in and out of consciousness, able to see parts of the path he was on, but not much more...

The sudden shock of him hitting the bed knocked a few things loose inside his head, putting him out of commission for a few moments. The sound of the chips and wires rattling was almost audible, but the repair was quiet. He started to utter a few, short, monotone words, but remained still. "Repair... begin..."

The nanotech in his body slowly began to work, sealing the wounds fully, and repairing the damage done to his internal circuitry, slight ripples going though his skin as the repairs got too close to it. It was almost as if his body were alive, but he wasn't. And, after a few minutes, it was over, and his body lay silent and motionless again.

His eyes snapped open about a minute later, as he sat up, looking around, taking in his surroundings. Oddly enough, the fact there was another being in the room didn't register just then. He was more focused on creating a mental map, and figuring out where he was. He did catch sight of the man, though, and that were all his focus did return. Then, his eyes locked on the weapon holstered into the man's pants, and his hand. Seeing little threat in such a low caliber weapon, as well as seeing the intention was only for defense, he stood up, the stitching that was done just falling from his body like it wasn't attached. His polychromatic eyes scanned the new being, taking in who he was, and attempting to run a search on him. No signal.

"You... You saved me?"

His voice was like someone had thrown a priest at a tiger, solemn, but gruff. An odd voice for such a thin being...

The Fenrir didn't so much as twitch when the being's eyes opened some minutes later. Of course, as soon as those eyes did open and he glimpsed their colour, he knew exactly who he was in the company of. What luck! He'd be rolling in the money if he managed to hand this guy in somewhere. The only problem with that being that he was certain that he couldn't get the Tails X project anywhere any government buildings without alerting him to what his intentions were. Best to feign ignorance for the time being.

Those hard blue eyes locked onto the falling stitches and narrowed in slight annoyance, after all, it meant wasted medical supplies, and then returned to the male stood near his bed. Remarkable healing abilities. He probably would have healed himself soon enough even if the Fenrir had left him on the street. He wasn't sure whether to be glad that he'd found the wanted specimen, or annoyed that he'd brought such trouble right into his safehouse.

Fenrir hadn't moved at all, only stood, observing, waiting for an excuse to use his gun or move at the slightest hint of aggression. When none was shown, still he didn't relax, especially as those unusual eyes scanned over his form. Hopefully he gave nothing away, after all, no-one knew to look for a tail stuffed down the back of his pants and he was leaning against the wall anyway, so for all intents and purposes right then, he looked simply like a city-dweller who could probably do with a new wardrobe.

"You hardly needed saving since you're healed already." He commented in return, his own voice soft but firm. It was a tone that brooked no nonsense, one that, to ensure he kept up the facade of cluelessness, hinted at a mild curiosity regarding the speed at which his 'guest' healed.

"You're safe for now." He announced. "But I'd advise against causing such a fuss next time. While most eyes refuse to be drawn to business that isn't their own, there are those whose eyes see more than they should."

"Thank you for the effort." There was a small smile on his face, one of ignorance, and innocence. Yet, he had shed the blood of thousands before, and could easily do it again. He ran his hands along his stomach and chest, 'noticing' the healed wounds. "So I have." Licking his teeth, which were very slightly pointed, he continues to study the new face. His ears pick up the slight curiosity in Fenrir's voice. He was wondering how much he knew. Thinking up a quick half-truth, he nods. "Ah, at least my nanites work. Thank you medical science."

"Safe. Right." He takes another look around at his surroundings. He moves over to one of the walls, knocking on it softly, pressing his ear to the wall. "Structurally sound, but not perfect. I'd say it's alright for now, though." He nods simply.

Now standing, his posture was far from normal. When he was standing up, he seems to stand perfectly erect, like a soldier. But, when he was moving, his posture changed entirely, becoming more savage, like a beast.

"I guess your eyes saw what mine didn't." He nods. "But, I don't know how long I can stay." Again, he tries getting a signal. Nothing. "Call me Xlaits."

He licks his teeth once more, grabbing onto the metal bed frame, getting a much better signal. Doing a scan, and searching for His new acquaintance's information, he sits atop the frame. All he could find, was a name, without complicating hacking.

"Fenrir, I'm guessing?"

Fenrir was finding it interesting just seeing what excuses the male could come up with for each of the little things that Fenrir was mentioning. Nanites was fair enough as he was fairly certain that they were used in most medical practices those days, or at least, they were well on their way to being used, even for the less priviledged of members of society. Or perhaps they were still in the testing stages and this guy was pretending to have been a test subject. The Fenrir wasn't sure, he hardly kept up with the medical profession. That was something more suited to those who stood in his path.

While Fenrir wasn't yet reknowned, since drawing too much attention to himself was probably not a good idea, he was fairly well known on the mercenary scene and while he had managed to mostly keep off the records kept for mercenaries, one would be hard pressed to find information about him without hacking into the well protected databases of the research institutes he'd been 'created' by. He didn't yet realise that this 'Xlaits' was capable of just such a thing, though he'd heard that even accomplished hackers had to spend some hours trying to access secure documents and the like.

His eyes remained narrowed as he watched the male survey his safe house and again, such a thing aroused suspicion. A normal person would simply accept his word of the house being safe and wouldn't know what to look for in order to tell if that was so. This guy probably didn't even realise how easily he was giving himself away to someone who knew what to look for. Perhaps Xlaits thought that it was safe to make such observations since he had no idea that Fenrir was after the bounty on his head.

When his name was spoken, Fenrir had to forcefully suppress the urge to growl in the back of his throat. There was nothing to give the male his name, so Fenrir could only wonder at how he got it. However, as long as Xlaits didn't link his name with the project, he figured that he'd be alright. Seemed as though his luck was shot with this guy though, so he figured that claiming the bounty was going to be anything but easy.

"So you know my name." He stated flatly. A name didn't have to mean anything. Perhaps a bounty hunter in the area had mentioned his name to this guy. "What were you doing getting shot up in an alley in the middle of town? You do it for kicks, because you know you'll heal quickly?" He guessed vaguely, though he didn't really care about the answer. He was going to try and garner as much information off Xlaits as he could so that he could try to determine a way to get the guy to a government holding facility in order to claim his bounty. The tightwads in the government weren't so generous that they'd just come and collect the target after all, so Xlaits had to be delivered.

So... How in the hells would he go about getting Xlaits somewhere like a holding facility? It didn't seem possible just yet.

"And why can't you stay long?" He went on, following on from his earlier questioning. He still hadn't moved from the wall, didn't seem very inclined to do so either, not for the moment, he was almost as still as a statue as he remained there, leaning against the wall. "It's safe here. There's no need to rush back out into the city is there?"

"I only want to help. Maybe it'll..." He stops mid-sentence. "Maybe it'll make a difference." He almost blew it right there. He was licking his teeth, studying Fenrir's reaction to his words. "I only want to help out those in need." He noticed the suppressed growl, and felt it necessary to do another look into the man's profile. "I do know your name. You've got a small mentioning on the Merc Circuit." He grins. "Quite a mess you've made."

And so the hacking began, and the conversation from him almost went dull, using most of his processes to crack the codes. "Let's just say, I'm getting a little more popular that I should be, hmm?" The emotion left his face and voice, his eyes seeming duller, like someone had hit a dimmer switch on his eyes, as if they were lights. His voice was borderline monotone.

"Besides, I don't need to be bringing a burden on you." He licks his teeth.

It would have been funny if the situation wasn't so serious. Xlaits seemed to be trying so hard to maintain his secrets when Fenrir already knew exactly who and what he was. Perhaps it was cruel of him to keep up the charade of ignorance, getting some sick pleasure out of watching Xlaits trying to give away nothing incriminating while still satisfy the blond's apparent curiosity.

What he couldn't understand though, was why a weapon, someone deemed volatile and dangerous, was supposedly trying to help people out. It didn't make sense to him. Helping others only got you killed or imprisoned for one reason or another. Xlaits would soon find that out for himself though, when Fenrir brought him in to claim the bounty on his head. But for a weapon to be acting kind seemed ridiculous. Had the scientists been giving more conscience to their creations before they were shut down? It was absurd.

"Quite a mess?" He snorted dismissively. "I only do what I'm paid to do. It's not my fault if people get in my way." He shrugged.

He was intrigued by how Xlaits apparently knew him as a mercenary and yet didn't seem afraid about being brought in. Perhaps he thought that Fenrir didn't recognise him, or was too much of a pushover to worry about. That opinion would probably change if he found out about project Fenrir, since he knew that some files still existed on that failed project.

Fenrir didn't reply though, when it became clear that Xlaits was paying little, if any more attention to the questioning. He didn't understand that look but knew that it would bode ill for him. His body tensed right up, his tail, tucked away as it was, bristled and again he felt like growling. Xlaits was up to something and Fenrir couldn't leave if he wanted to collect that bounty. He could hardly stay though, in case Xlaits did something that would warrant the male being considered dangerous. For all Fenrir knew, he could be doing anything from telepathically ordering pizza to having a mental breakdown.

"What else do the mercs say about me, hm?" He asked guardedly. "You seem to know a lot for someone who isn't a mercenary himself."

He almost didn't catch what Fenrir questioned him about. "Nothing." These files were really being a pain. It was using more energy than he expecting, and it was starting to effect his very form. His skin had gone pale, almost white. His eyes became duller, and his ears started to form slight points. His teeth and tounge started to taper a little more as well. "I've gotten nothing else off the Merc network."

His full body was under a cloak, modified for the normal world. It was only a disguise, to keep people from turning him in. "Uroburos... compromised..." Uroburos was the codename for his disguise program, which was starting to corrupt, and fail from the over-redirection of energy. "Uroburos shutdown imminent."

"Damnit." he shakes his head, his voice still borderline monotone, some of his words completely flat-lining. He had gotten the files he needed, and stored them, but it might have been a bit too late for his programming...

The impossibly calm blond finally seemed to react to the project's actions. He stood properly, no longer leaning against the wall and his eyes were locked on Xlaits, reading his body language for the slightest hint of agression. He didn't understand what Xlaits was doing, especially since it was seeming to drain the white haired male at an alarming rate. Everyone feared what they didn't understand, even Fenrir, though he was better than most at hiding it. Whatever was happening to Xlaits seemed unnatural and Fenrir could only hope that it couldn't be transferred from one project to another.

It was when Xlaits' form seemed to flicker that Fenrir began edging away from him. His hand slid to the gun tucked into his waistband and he gripped it firmly, with the ease and comfort of someone well used to the motions.

"Seems to me as though it's not just the merc networks that you've gleaned information from." He commented defensively, his whole body tense. He would have liked his tail free for extra balance and manoeuverablity but if Xlaits didn't yet know what he was, there was no point in revealing certain things just yet. "The hell is wrong with you? What are you doing?" He asked, maintaining a safe distance from the white haired male.

"Maybe we should get you to a doctor." He suggested, though his idea of a doctor was going to be a scientist at the nearest holding facility. He didn't sound like he cared about the male's well being either, only about his own should Xlaits start acting even more strangely than he already was.

"Project... Fenrir..." His dulled eyes look up at Fenrir, as his hands grip the bed frame tighter, crushing it. "Precursor... to Project... Tails... X..." Oddly enough, this was true. the 'waste of resources' was replaced by the much easier to produce Tails X line. "Uroburos Failing..." Xlaits, standing up, moved back, and away from Fenrir. "Power failing. Uroburos Failed. Attempting restart... failed." His body continued to progress further into the unnatural mutation, his face bending outward, and his pupils switching to slits. "Project Fenrir... Fenrir..." There was a long pause, the body of the broken project shaking. "Brother..." A tail of his own forcefully formed, causing the being to cry out, falling forward, onto his elbows and knees.

"Damnit, not now..." He shakily looked up at Fenrir, his voice calm, but shaking. "Fenrir... I... I can assure you... I am broken..."

The lightning strike that awoke him, also damaged a lot of his internal workings, which have yet to be repaired. He was almost useless until Uroburos failed, which was restricting his weapons, as well.

Growling and snarling, blackened claws tore out of the male's fingertips, muscles bulging along it's body. "You... you're... going to... see..." He growled harshly, his words oddly calm in a situation that, for anyone, would have been painfully terrifying. "Why... they want me..."

His ears reconfiguring, and his hair seemingly starting to cover his new form, he looks up, his sharp teeth drawn into a sinister grin, his eyes almost piercing the very core of their target. His tail lashing like a whip, he slowly stands, much taller now, his body hunched over. He looked ragged and war torn, his muzzle aimed right at Fenrir's heart. "I am... a beast..." He was now a clear threat to anyone who wasn't smart enough to not mess with him.

"Fenrir..." His voice was strained, slow and solemn, but still more of a growl than anything. "I know what you are... and I know that, if you hadn't before, you know I'm the wanted Project, Tails X..."

His face now showing emotion again, was blank, wondering at what his newfound brother would do, how he would react. He tensed at the sight of the other male's hand on his gun, his tailwrapping around itself as a few final touches took place. He looked like a somewhat smaller version of the hulk... infused with a white tiger...

Fenrir could only stand and watch as the male changed, seemed to mutate right in front of his eyes. The Fenrir didn't know that the being he had first seen, the human, wasn't the real appearance of the Tails X project. He didn't want to draw attention to himself, didn't want to make any sudden moves, so Fenrir simply pressed himself against the wall once more as if it would absorb him and protect him from harm. He knew it wouldn't but it felt oddly reassuring to have something solid at his back, as opposed to feeling confined with nowhere to run. A cornered wolf was a dangerous one after all.

What his fellow project didn't seem to realise was that Fenrir didn't care if Xlaits was broken or in full repair. None of it mattered. He was a mercenary, a good one, and he wasn't going to let this walking bounty go without a fight. While Xlaits seemed to find camaraderie between them, being two similar projects, the Fenrir saw only money. He'd been free for far too long, felt too much hostility towards anyone and anything to feel anything akin to friendship.

There was fear too, Xlaits was taller than him even in human form and had grown even taller with the program's failure. His hand firmly held his gun but he had a feeling that it wouldn't be a whole lot of help against the beast stood before him. He would have to use his physical skills to subdue the Tails X project and that wasn't good. He had gone untested in hand to hand combat for a long time. Why waste effort when a bullet had sufficed in the past? Perhaps he should have kept up to date with his abilities.

"I knew what you were from the moment you opened your eyes." He announced firmly, masking his fear and apprehension. He was strong and his abilities continued to develop with every day that he was out of confinement, beyond the reach of the immuno-suppressants that had so subdued him before. He may not know his own strength just then, he may not be some huge beast of a man, but he would find a way to turn the situation to his advantage.

"I know what you are, I know how much the bounty is on your head and I know where the nearest government holding centre is." Clearly there was no sense of brotherhood in the Fenrir who saw only money when he looked at Xlaits. "I'm a mercenary and you're a wanted fugitive with a price on your head. Do you catch my drift?" He asked with a small smirk. Beast or not, Fenrir was going to find a way to claim the bounty.

"So Xlaits, are you going to make this easy or hard?" He asked flatly, settling his body into a relaxed but clearly threatening stance.

Falling back onto his rear, his ears twitch, a slight snarl escaping his lips. "Everyone seems to know exactly who I am." He shakes his head, ears remaining turned to the male, always alert. "You think the government can save you? What was their purpose in creating me? What was their purpose in creating you, Fenrir?" He grins, his slightly yellowed, and bloodstained teeth showing, each sharp tooth shining a little.

"There's a price on my head? I know. If it's that important to you, I'll help you out. A mutual agreement." Cunning wasn't in his bag of tricks, but he needed to keep the other 'hostile' project busy while he sorted though thoughts. "I don't want to hurt you, but I will if I must." He raises an arm, pointing it right at Fenrir's heart, then, aiming it to the side, before flicking his wrist, a few sharp spikes piercing almost fully though the concrete. "Now, you're lucky there's no claim on your head, Brother."

The beast smiled, his tail swishing behind him. "If you attempt to take me, I'm not going to make it easy. But, I know you're a money lover. I'll give you a little taste of my bargain..." His eyes gleaming, he stood back up, pacing in a semi-circle around his brother, his tail flicking this way and that. It seemed pointless at that moment, but, he drew closer with each pass, his grin getting wider, before he was nearly face to face with the other project, heavy, catnip scented breath right in his face. But, there was another figure in the room, still pacing in a half-circle like Tails X had done.

"Here's my proposal... You'll get profit, riches for life. I just need a little time to repair. I'll even help you where needed. Once I'm fully repaired, I can show you how well I can be of use to you, Brother." The other form, behind him, spoke with the same tone as the beast.

"I'm right. I just need a little time, and you can be the richest man alive. Well, as far as escaped, nearly decommissioned projects go, anyway." It was odd, the way both forms seemed to know what each other was thinking, how each one would react. It was odd that they looked exactly the same...

"You know nothing about me." The Fenrir snarled, his tail bristled inside his pants. He so badly wanted to free it, to allow the tail to show just how agitated he was underneath his calm exterior, to perhaps add a little to how intimidating he would like to be. He kept the appendage firmly tucked into his pants though, especially since it wouldn't change the outcome of any fights except to perhaps help him balance a little better. He supposed that he'd see what happened if he did try to instigate a fight. Looking at how big and powerful the tiger appeared to be, it would probably be in his best interests to find a peaceful solution.

"I've been free for longer than you've been alive. You know nothing about me, nothing more than what the old reports say about the failed project that escaped and wasn't seen since. Nothing more than what the merc network knows about me, which isn't much." He sneered, watching the spikes pierce the wall with something that might have have been awe. He certainly wasn't capable of that himself but he had a few of his own tricks up his sleeves. Better not play his hand too soon though.

When the tiger began to circle him, the Fenrir remained tense, disliking the predatory manner he was being stalked but still he stayed motionless, only his eyes moving to track the white tiger's movement. When he glimpsed the second figure pacing as Tails X had, the Fenrir's eyes narrowed. The odds were certainly not in his favour and although he didn't want to admit it, that proposal was looking more and more appealing.

"Why should I help you, what good is a wanted fugitive to me when the bounty on your head is so high? Where are you going to get riches from anyway? Besides, you wouldn't be able to go anywhere or else you'd get caught. What good could you possibly do for me, repaired or not?" He asked skeptically.

Of course, Xlaits didn't know that Fenrir actually kind of enjoyed the life of a mercenary. It wasn't glamorous by any means, but there was always the thrill of the hunt, of challenging a particularly difficult mark. Xlaits was proving to be more difficult than he could have anticipated though and there was no way that he could just allow Xlaits to walk away. Couldn't let the project get away or else it would ruin his reputation. With that in mind, the Fenrir project went impossibly tense, like a coiled spring and then sprung at Xlaits, one of them at least, fangs and claws bared, tail bursting from the back of his pants to balance him.

Grinning lightly, the large mass of fur and muscle spun, grabbing the other by the shirt, and tossing him to the other form, who caught him, licking his teeth. "Again, I told you, I'm not going to make this easy. I have a way that this one fugitive, can pay off so much more than just one time." Xlaits grins, pulling the spikes from the wall, pushing them back into his arm. "For now, I am useless, other than money. When I am repaired, though..." The other form let him down, not even bothering to restrain him. "I could be an amazing weapon-smith." Licking his teeth he drew close to Fenrir again, ears twitching.

"Another attack would prove useless, Fenrir. you may be aged, Big Brother, but you still have 'tells.' Did you know why they were decommissioning you?" He grins widely. "You were too human for them. Your tells gave away what moves you were going to make. Your very body betraying you, your muscles tense right before you move." The trained eye could see that muscles tensed up before they moved. Xlaits, and his copy, seemed constantly relaxed. "Be glad I don't want to kill you."

He sighs slightly, his thick breath warm, and again, heavily catnip scented. "Your files are corrupt, you know that? A lot of the old files, the ones that survived, are fragmented."

It was then, he realized something. "Oh, how rude of me. Call me Xlaits." Chuckling softly, he almost seemed to ignore the seriousness of the situation. "Behind you, my copy... you can call him Tails." The copy only waved. It was a perfect imitation, not a single fur out of place. "He's an exact copy, built as decoys. They can still function like me, and they're identical to my blueprints. They only last 24 hours, though." He grins wider. "Catch my drift, Brother?"

In all honesty, the Fenrir wasn't really surprised when his attack was nullified with such ease that it was almost disheartening. He wasn't strong enough to beat the creature and it was highly probable that he wouldn't ever be as strong as Xlaits was. He was an earlier project and although his full potential hadn't been realised, Xlaits was bigger and better than he was. He didn't even bother to struggle against the form that held him, only hung there and considered what was being said. He wasn't sure whether it was all worth the effort at the end of the day.

What concerned him was that he had no guarantee that the Tails X project would keep his word. If Fenrir allowed him to repair, what was to stop Xlaits from just walking out, or destroying him or even handing him in to one of the holding centres? No doubt they'd be glad to get a rogue project off the streets, even an obsolete one. But 'too human'? Figured as much. The humans became paranoid when things were too much like themselves. And being too human didn't make him a very good weapon.

Well whatever, he was making a damn fine mercenary anyway.

"My files are corrupt? Well good for me. It means there's less information on me than I thought. Makes it harder to catch something you know nothing about after all." He muttered, brushing himself off and straightening his clothes. He still wasn't sure what to make of Xlaits but there wasn't a whole lot he could do when he was sharing space with him right then.

"So if I let you repair, you'll let me hand over your doubles to the holding centres to claim the bounty on your head over and over again? How do I know you'll keep your word? How do I know that you won't just walk out once you've repaired? I'll need some kind of insurance, I'm not just going to let that juicy sum of money slip through my fingers." He announced, folding his arms. At least it looked as though he was considering the offer.

"Insurance?" His ears twitched, before looking to his copy, which nods, showing a holographic screen. "I'm scouring the networks for even a trace of your name. If it directly relates to you, I'll soon have the only copy." He nods. "And I've already said I'll create weapons for you." His ears twitch a little more.

"Here, I've got it..."

He opens up his arm, producing a watch with no face. It looked as if it were a digital watch, its shining, reflective face showing black. Without asking, he snaps it around the mercenary's wrist. "You won't get any signal down here, but it'll track my movements, no matter where I go. Except here, of course. There's crap reception in here."

He grins, taking a seat on the bed once more, his nanites repairing the crushed parts of the frame. "So, do I have a deal?" He nods, already working on pulling apart one of his arms. "It actually won't take as long as I thought."

Amidst the wiring and chips, the metal and plastic, was also signs of fracture and charring. Wires that were barely connected sparked, and glowed hot. Nanites working to repair everything, he nods, needing to see the problem, to fix it.

That was extremely tempting. If Xlaits had the only copy of any information at all available, then no-one but Xlaits would know who and what he was, and none would be able to find out that information unless they somehow managed to obtain any hard copies of the information that might be archived in the research facilities. It would guarantee him some safety, and if ever information got out about what he was, he would know that Xlaits was to blame, allowing him to hunt down the tiger and destroy him if need be.

He wasn't quite quick enough to dodge the possible attack and he would have wound up injured if the Tails X project had been out to hurt him, but when it was only some kind of watch attached to his wrist, Fenrir relaxed a little, though the sour expression on his face didn't disappear even as he listened to what the item was that had been forced on him.

He had to admit that it sounded like a pretty sweet deal. He'd know where Xlaits was if ever he was betrayed by the newer project, there would be no information on the older project and he'd have an in-house weaponsmith. There wasn't really any reason for him to say no, especially not if he was going to be claiming the bounty on Xlaits more than once. It would be perfect if it all went to plan. He bloody well hoped it did. He'd be loaded if he went through with it, secure and anonymous as anything but a damn good mercenary.

"Alright." He agreed, looking at the face of the receiver on his wrist even though it showed nothing with the bad reception. "We have a deal." He nodded, watching as the project immediately set about repairing himself. Fenrir left him to it, since he didn't have any way of helping the Tails X project to regenerate, so he kept out of the way. Once the white tiger was done with repairs, he'd start cashing in.

Overseeing his own repair, he smiles softly, licking at his teeth. It was odd. For a large machine, built for war and killing, he seemed... well at the moment... innocent. His tail swaying behind him, his ears twitching, he keeps his eyes glued to his repairs, but it seemed, as he got further and further into the repairs, he got more and more annoyed with each one. "Once he's done, I'll transfer the data and you can take him to the holding facility. He's only got about five, maybe six hours left." Grinning, he shakes his head. "Ok, this is starting to bug me..."

Fed up by the time he had finished one arm, and his legs, he just ripped the other arm forcefully off, making a jagged tear. roaring loudly in pain, he shudders, shaking his head. Surprisingly, he didn't bleed, like when he had been shot. In fact, the tubes of coolant, and blood-colored oil seemed to be pre-sealed, before the rip. "Ouch... ow... ow..." His arm, having been ripped off, was thrown forcefully against the floor, causing it to shatter like glass, then melt, like water, pooling up in a single puddle. He stands, getting down and dipping his shoulder into the puddle, and rising from the floor, the nanites reforming his arm perfectly.

"There, that's all foreseeable repairs. My chest and head had been well protected against large amounts of electricity. Now..." he nods, looking over himself once, and then stretching out all his joints, he licks his teeth. "I'll debug my Uroburos as I move. In the mean time, I'll see what I can do. Hmm... You look like a pistol... or a collapsible rifle type of guy... Hmm..."

Pulling a small metal disk from his arm, he tosses it on the floor. The slightly raised surface opens, projecting a digital workspace inside the confines of the basement, before switching to a dull blue light. Molding what seemed to be the very air around him, he works in the digital space, re-creating the very pistol that Fenrir wore in his waistband. Alongside that, he was designing a wristband, oddly enough, to fit around his wrist and most of his arm, up to the elbow.

"Screw conventional methods of carrying weapons. I'll give you the ability to use my ability, limited, of course." he grins, licking his teeth. "The wristband, once done, will fit like a glove, and pretty much dissapear after a while. It'll be nearly permanent, as only I'll be able to remove it." He continues to work, tail swishing, and ears swiveling. "And you'll forget it's on after a while. I'll be able to monitor your bodily functions, and come to your aid, if needed. All it'll need, is weapon programs. Each program I'll create and test, before letting you try it out."

His free arm morphs fully, the forearm now the end of a high powered, 50 caliber sniper rifle. "My weapons need no ammunition. They feed on themselves, and regenerate as needed, and leave no shells behind." He smiles, his weapon arm reforming his regular arm. "Like it so far?" Hall he had done, was increased the caliber of the original form, and added an engraving. A rose, black in color, with red, thorny vines snaking down the slide. "I have a trademark for all my weapons. It's the black rose, red vines thing."

Fenrir didn't have much else to do but watch. Right then he was feeling utterly overwhelmed, his simple mercenary life had been well and truly turned on its head by the appearance of the project with the highest bounty on his head. Fenrir was really starting to regret having taken the project into his safehouse because it felt as though his life had suddenly been taken out of his hands. His life was no longer his own and he hated it. Xlaits was waltzing in and taking over his life, taking liberties with him, doing things to him without asking, assuming that everything would be fine. Fenrir hated it.

He didn't really have a choice though, at least not for the time being. Xlaits had overpowered him without really trying earlier, so there was no way to get rid of him like that. Perhaps after he'd claimed the bounty on the beast's clone, he'd just get rid of the Tails X project by asking nicely for him to leave and take all of his 'enhancements' and 'abilities' with him. Leaving the weapons behind of course. Having a high powered sniper rifle with him would make his job infinitely easier, if a little less exciting.

He hadn't said anything at all for a long time, just stood there, feeling rather awkward and watching Xlaits do his thing. Even the fact that he'd ripped off his arm didn't seem to bring out a reaction from the Fenrir who looked on dispassionately. The thing really was just a project if it was able to just rip off and reform its arm like that. Was there nothing human about it at all? It probably didn't even feel pain the way a human would, probably just had sensors telling it that something was damaged, and that the programmed response was to shout out.

"You make it sound as though I'm keeping you around forever." He stated blandly, not sounding all that impressed. Granted the project was doing all kinds of weird and wonderful things but Fenrir hadn't wanted any of it in the first place, not to mention that he was a stoic bastard and it took a lot to impress him.

"I don't want you to change me, I'm fine the way I am, whether or not I'm using conventional weapons or any of this fancy new technology. Just because I'm outdated, doesn't mean that my methods are any less effective. I still get the job done." He muttered. If he let Xlaits craft new weapons and armour for him, the next thing he knew, the project would be trying to upgrade him or something. "And you make it sound as though I care about what's on the gun. As long as it does what it's supposed to do, you can draw wolves all over it for all I care." He growled dismissively. Yes, he was rather predisposed towards wolves, after his namesake of sorts.

"Hurry up so I can take you in and claim my money already."

"Hey, beauty isn't rushed." He chuckles softly, licking his teeth. "I need to get everything perfect, and in a working order. Honestly, I just keep a trademark, something to identify my weapons from the norm." His hands busy, even his tail started to re-arrange parts and pieces. "Hey, I'm just trying to keep you in a good mood. You never seem to smile. Think about it." He chuckles softly as he works, keeping a dull conversation going with Fenrir. "Listen, I'm probably the farthest thing from human you can get, Fenrir. Yet, I seem to have and show a full range of emotion."

His smile suddenly was wiped clean off his face. In a moment, he had gone from smiling, to a rather grim expression. "Let me tell you something, Brother. I know you may not care, but at least listen." He scraps the model, and starts anew, shaking his head. "The beast I am today, was never my original design." The other, finishing it's original task, moves to Fenrir, opening a detailed blueprint of the Tails X project. "That is my current body. Wires, nanites, metal and plastic." The image changes, for the worse. It was a security camera feed, recorded during the war, a few years before Project Fenrir was even a thought.

Two armed guards stood watch, as, in a large, almost daycare looking room, two beings were playfighting. One of them, resembled the large beast before him, the project Tails X. There was another, a brown-furred girl, seemingly a puppy. They went at each other like each attack was real, perfectly matched in combat.

"Do you remember Project Rosenthal, Brother? No?" He shakes his head as he works, the video continuing. "She was killed three days after this feed was recorded, by my own hand. We were both kids then, and I don't remember hearing about you. We were the first in a super soldier program, bred in test-tubes. We were so expensive to create, we were canceled. Rose, dead, is in Cryogenic Freeze, in the labs."

There were small traces of glistening tears in the project's eyes, his unblinking lids focused on his task. "I was a cub. Living flesh... bone... and blood. I was alive. They treated us like property. I was trained in impossible situations, made to do repetitive tasks, and given un-achieveable goals. Do you know what it feels like to have every bone in your arm and hand shattered and powdered from catching a live tank round?" His tail, unable to continue working, flopped lazily down, giving up. He shook his head again, remembering something as one of his arms stops it's task to grip the other arm, as if in severe physical pain. "I was patched up and sewn back together like a ragdoll, a simple child's plaything. I was used and abused like a slave. Then... I was forgotten... left in a broken body, and given enough food and water to live."

The next thing he said, was almost in anger. It had so much venom in every syllable, that it could have almost been literally poisonous to listen to. "I was given up on... for Project... Fenrir." He shakes his head, pausing and continuing his work quietly for what seemed to be an eternity. When he spoke, it was calm and gentle, but heavily sorrowed. "I don't hate you. Not in the slightest. I hate myself more than anything. Killing the only thing I had that was the closest thing to family."

He stops working, ears twitching, a half completed weapon hanging in the air. "After you escaped... they focused on me again... on repairing me... on making me better. Nanites were introduced, eating away at my body like acid. twice as painful as that, though... being strapped down, twisting and contorting as pain seeped to my very core... and then... it was all over. I stopped needing to breathe. I stopped needing to eat, or answer the call of nature." He looks slowly over to the other project, shaking his head softly as he looks though his tears, as if he had relived that moment, and then back to his work.

"Brother..."

He bites his tongue, shaking his head. "I don't want you to be like me. I don't want you to have to endure what I did. I'm damned near immortal. They didn't want me to be completely all-powerful, so if I ever did turn on them, they at least had a fighting chance."

The copy, shaking it's head, closes the holographic screen, placing it's hands behind it's back, and using a little nanites to create handcuffs. "Take him to the holding facility. I'll have your weapon ready when you get back. Besides... I need a little moment to myself..."

Under his breath, he mumbled a single word. "Rose..."

Fenrir didn't care. Everyone had their own sob stories, the Fenrir included. After all, he too had become obsolete, only spared enough provisions to keep him alive, though for what reason they did so, was unclear. He supposed when enough time passed, he would have been terminated, as he would be if anyone besides the Tails X project found out who he was. But Xlaits could whine and moan about his depressing past all he wanted, it wouldn't change anything. The Fenrir had no interest in the things the project had been through and he'd moved on from his own past. He wouldn't have become a mercenary if he hadn't.

In all honesty, he just looked bored, stood there as he was. In the entire time he'd been in the presence of the superior project, besides his little attack earlier, Fenrir hadn't moved very much at all. It was as though he was more machine than Xlaits was, especially since, as the project rightly noted, he'd show little if any emotion despite the circumstances. He may be more human than the Tails X project but he certainly didn't show it.

When ordered to take the copy and cash in on the bounty, Fenrir didn't even blink at being ordered around, though the fur of his tail, still hidden down his pants, bristled at being given orders. Xlaits wasn't his boss so he had no need to obey, however, getting away from the project was looking pretty damned appealing, as long as the copy didn't start trying to give him some kind of pep-talk. Grabbing a chain hanging on one wall of the safe house, Fenrir secured it to the cuffs to give the illusion of being able to control the copy and gave it a tug to direct the copy to walk in front of him. He wouldn't be very good at his job if he allowed the beast to walk behind him, since he wouldn't want to be attacked from the rear.

With the copy walking ahead and the chain trailing between them, wordlessly Fenrir urged them out onto the streets once more and it wasn't long before they were noticed. Whispers broke out around them as they walked.

While people turned to look at the pair, they murmured about how that must be the infamous Tails X project and that the guy with him was going to be loaded if he made it to the holding facility. It made Fenrir wary of attacks from others interested in claiming the bounty for themselves. "Move quicker." He ordered as they walked towards the facility, since he'd seen a couple of unsavoury characters already with their eyes on the project he had captive. "If someone comes after you, I don't think it needs to be said that you pretend to try a getaway. If you don't, people might get suspicious." He muttered, irritated at how inconvenient it would be.

The holding facility wasn't too far away but right then with hostiles potentially on all sides, it seemed much further away than it was and he tightened his grip on the chain, tense as they moved on through the city.

Snarling, growling, and lashing out, the imitation was doing a perfect job at seeming hostile. It's tail lashing to and fro, whipping and tugging at the chain, he made false attempts at escape. If anyone got within distance, he'd snap and lunge at them, it's eyes scanning the crowds for any threat to Fenrir. It was planing on using a timed lash at a civilian, to block any incoming bullet, but that had it's limits.

Being a lot weaker than the original, the clone was easy to maintain, but still a challenge to control. Not a hard challenge, but difficult enough. Once it hit the end of the chain, it'd tug, but not go much further. It did occasionally snap and bite at it's 'captor,' but never meant true harm.

"Bastard! If I ever get free, you're DEAD!"

It was really getting into the spirit of things, and wanted to keep the highest cover possible. It wasn't too sure of how the facility would hold it, so it started to plan. Windows, explosives, mimicry, anything to escape before it melted into a puddle of unusable nanotechnology.

----------

Xlaits was in a horrid mood after reliving that memory. Pissed at himself, he takes a gun to his own head, but stops. His hesitation reminds him of training. He hesitated once, and got shot. The moment that memory was over, he pulled the trigger forcefully, putting a round though his head.

Unfortunately, he got back up.

"Damn it." The hole in his head repairing, he goes back to work on the weapon, testing out the design, the firing mechanics, and every little detail about it, minimizing kickback, and maximizing accuracy. Finding the right balance, he mimics the weapon with his own arm, throwing a copy out and firing several shots into it. Shoddy work, but he was attempting to mimic the worst possible conditions to be firing from. He only missed once, putting a bullet hole in the wall.

"Heh, my best work so far. Well, second best."

He thought back to the stoic brother of his. "He's gotta learn to lighten up; The whole world isn't all about being serious... damn it, I'm talking to myself again..."He really didn't like seeing Fenrir in that usual, uncaring manner of his, but he'd have to deal with it for now. He did see almost a slight hint of emotion, but it could have been anything.

Going into overdrive, he started to make brother and sister parts to the weapon, creating silencers and scopes, all universal on his creations. A large bore sniper rifle, and a small assault rifle were soon created, and, after making a few more classes of weaponry, he switches from weapons, to parts, then from parts to ammo types, each part getting tested thoroughly.

He had gone with Fenrir's idea. Every weapon incorporated wolves in some way shape or form, only keeping his signature in small, insignificant, but visible areas. Now, was a challenge... to create a signature bullet...

Fenrir had to admit, when it came down to it, the copy was doing a damned good job at what it needed to do. He had to admit that he'd been a little surprised when the creature went from being docile and obedient as it had been while in the safehouse, to hostile and angry once they were out in full view of everyone. At least the act would leave no doubt as to the real identity of the being he had 'captive'. None would guess that this wasn't the real thing and even Fenrir had to remind himself that he'd be seeing the project once he returned to the safehouse. It was a surreal experience to be sure.

His struggling with the chain wasn't faked though. Every time the beast yanked on it, Fenrir had to really exert a good deal of strength to 'correct' the beast, pulling him away from civilians, pushing him away from himself and generally fighting every step of the way to the holding facility. By the time they reached it, Fenrir wasn't far from exhausted with the effort that their charade had taken. The only fortunate thing was that word travelled quickly to the facility, so when they weren't too far from it, armed soldiers came out to escort them up to the automatic doors that would admit them.

They were accepted immediately into a small room off the corridor and the copy was taken away, manhandled through another door by a dozen armed men with a few scientists scattered amongst them. The last Fenrir saw of the copy was its back as it disappeared through the door, and then he was sat down for questioning.

After making up some bullshit story about finding, fighting and defeating the project some days ago (despite how he bore no evidence of this 'fight'), he was made to sign some forms to confirm payment of the bounty and then after a number of pats on the back for a damn good job, he was given a massive wad of money. Mercenaries were only ever paid by cash, of course, to eliminate any chance of being traced to an account.

When he laid eyes on that money, Fenrir just forgot about who he was going 'home' to. He'd be able to live off that money for months, longer if he continued to take jobs. Snorting in amusement and already entertaining thoughts of what he was going to spend his small fortune on, he paid barely any attention to his surroundings as he was escorted off the premises, since he had no further business there. Even after he'd left the rather cold and clinical looking building, Fenrir continued walking on autopilot, his feet carrying him where he needed to go without him needing to look up. He knew the area that well. He was too busy counting his money to care about watching where he was going anyway.

It was some time later that he began making his way back to the safehouse, though his arms were laden with bags that he'd filled with items purchased with his newly acquired money. Food was the most prominent thing in the bags, along with new clothes, new boots and a number of other things that were far less essential.

When he arrived back at the house, he'd forgotten completely about the person still there, so when he didn't immediately lay eyes on the project, he set his bags down by the door and stretched, pushing the back of his pants down a little to let his tail free. That act had him moaning quietly in bliss as his tail swayed behind him, freed from its cloth confines as his eyes closed to savour the sensation. When he opened them to see Xlaits, he froze, a mixture of surprise and annoyance flitting across his features as he bent to pick up his bags once more, his tail balancing him much better than it had when he'd had it stuffed down his pants, and headed into the kitchenette to put his food away.

Ears twitching as he worked on pushing the bullet ridden bodies into a corner, he paid no attention to the returning mercenary, until hearing the slight moan. His ears swiveling, he knew to keep his eyes on his work, keeping very quiet, even with the several dozen bullet holes in the wall and ceiling. It was a while before he actually spoke.

"How much did they actually give you? I'm only guessing they taxed the hell out of your payoff."

The place was considerably well cleaned up, despite what little there was and the bullet holes. Leaving him alone in a mess, was asking for a little cleaning. He hadn't actually cleaned, just make everything look a little neater at first glance.

"Yeah, I did move a few things around. feel free to ask me to move anything back. I remember where everything was placed." He still hadn't turned to face Fenrir, decomposing and reworking the copies he had made for target practice into his own body. "I did go a little overboard, by the way. You're going to be armed to the teeth. Even more so than I am. Actually, almost perfectly matched with me." He nods slightly, purring. He still hasn't turned to face him, not wanting to show the most recent wound, which was just starting to patch itself up.

"Everything's tested, Fenrir. I'm still revising the storage device, though." He nods again. "If you'd like to take a couple of test shots, just let me know." He smiles softly, knowing he's doing a good thing... or so he hoped. Helping a mercenary could go either way. It all depended on intent, something he wasn't good at seeing. He was limited, but he could tell some direct intent, like a hateful attack focused on him, but that was it.
